A Perth upbringing and an Austin education

Nielsen played junior basketball with Willetton and East Perth before his family moved to the United States. His father Matt, a former Boomers player and Wildcats assistant, had accepted a coaching opportunity with the Austin Spurs. Blake attended West Lake High School and then spent five seasons at St Edward's University.

That history gives his Perth arrival a homecoming dimension: he had already spent time around Wildcats practices during his father's coaching years.

A development contract with a next step

Perth's June 2026 announcement outlined a two-year agreement, beginning as a development player in NBL27 with a planned main-roster elevation for NBL28, subject to league approval. The club described him as a 200 cm point forward.

That combination of size and ball-handling is the useful context for his profile. His playing opportunities should be followed through actual appearances, rather than assuming a development contract guarantees regular minutes.
