How the Blitz Works

The NBL Blitz is a preseason tournament that brings the league’s clubs together as they prepare for the next campaign. The 2026 edition was held at Red Energy Arena in Bendigo from 2 to 6 September, with each of the ten teams playing two games. Its results belong to the preparation period for NBL27. They do not become regular-season wins or losses, and the Blitz points table is separate from the Ignite Cup.

A tournament with points for quarters

The official Blitz guide awards three points for winning a game. Each of the four regulation quarters also has one point available. A team that wins a quarter earns that point; if the quarter is tied, each team receives half a point. Those quarter rewards make the standings different from a simple list of wins and losses. A losing team can still add points by winning individual quarters.

Overtime decides the winner without a quarter bonus

Overtime periods do not add more quarter points. If a game needs overtime, the eventual winner still receives the three points for the game win. The quarter component comes only from Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4. This prevents a game with extra periods from offering more tournament points than one decided in regulation. A complete game therefore distributes seven points between the two teams: four from quarters and three from the result.

Reading Blitz Results and Standings

The official final standings and the match-by-match points breakdown answer slightly different questions. The official table records the final order announced by the league. The breakdown explains how individual results contribute points. Where clubs finish on the same total, use the official order rather than assuming alphabetical order or the win count settles the tie. The NBL’s final 2026 Blitz report provides the published finishing positions.

Follow the points back to a game

Open a club’s match-by-match section to see its game-win points, quarter points and total for each completed fixture. The game link leads to the result and box score. Compare those quarter scores if you want to understand why a close defeat still earned tournament points. A team’s overall table covers the whole event even when you have filtered the fixture list to one day or one opponent.

Missing quarters do not mean zero points

Some games may have a final score before all of the quarter information is available. The played count still recognises the completed fixture, but the points table identifies incomplete quarter coverage. A missing quarter is not treated as a loss or a score of zero. The number of games with complete quarter scores helps you see whether the calculated total covers every result for that team.

Using the Blitz Points Calculator

The calculator builds one example game. Choose the winner of each quarter, or a draw, and then select the overall game winner. It shows the quarter rewards and the separate three-point win bonus for both sides. The example is kept apart from actual results and never changes the standings. You can clear the example without losing your fixture filters, or reset the fixture selection while keeping the calculation.

For a straightforward example, a team winning all four quarters and the game earns seven points. Four tied quarters share two quarter points apiece; an eventual overtime winner then adds three. Some combinations are impossible, such as a team losing quarters, winning none and still winning the game. The calculator asks you to correct those selections instead of presenting an implausible example as a valid result.

NBL Blitz FAQs

Is the Blitz the same as the Ignite Cup?

No. The Blitz is a preseason tournament. The Ignite Cup uses designated in-season fixtures and has its own competition structure. Similar quarter-point rules do not make the two standings interchangeable.

Can a team earn points after losing?

Yes. It receives points for quarters it wins and half a point for each tied quarter. The three points for the overall game win go only to the victorious team.

Why does the calculated table have no official position column?

It explains points from the available games. It does not apply an unverified tie-break order. Where official final placings are available, they appear in the separate official standings table with their source.

Where are the next edition’s dates?

A later edition is not assigned dates by copying the previous tournament. Check the season dates page and official Blitz announcements. Existing results remain labelled with the year in which those games were played.
