Seeing the Hawks in Wollongong

Illawarra is the region on the jersey; Wollongong is the city to look for when planning a Hawks home visit. Start with the home fixture and check the arena, rather than searching for a stadium named after the team. The next-game card can send you interstate if the Hawks are travelling. For a local outing, the separate next-home card and the Home games filter keep the choice focused.

WIN Entertainment Centre and the Snakepit

The NBL club profile lists WIN Entertainment Centre as the main Hawks venue. The Snakepit also appears in Illawarra's basketball story and in some other basketball fixtures. These names should not be treated as two labels for the same building. Check the current match listing before entering a destination into your travel app.

For a WIN Entertainment Centre game, use the venue information above to check access, entry conditions and the relevant event details. Buy through the club's official ticket route and look at the basketball configuration. If you are arranging a group, agree on the number of seats and any access requirements first. A seat number, a standing option and a hospitality package can describe quite different experiences.

Supporters coming from Sydney should plan the return journey as carefully as the arrival. Allow for the game running longer than expected rather than booking around a presumed finishing time. The schedule gives a start, not a guaranteed end: breaks, stoppages and overtime can change when you leave the building. Check transport services directly for the date you choose.

Picking a Hawks date that suits you

Use the date fields to compare the fixtures that fit your weekend or school-holiday plans. Then look at the opponent and tip-off. If a search produces no games, clear the date range before deciding that the season is over. There may be a gap between home dates while Illawarra is on the road. A future Finals game should only be part of a travel plan once the fixture and qualification are confirmed.

Choose Sydney time for a visit to Wollongong. That follows New South Wales daylight saving through the NBL summer. If you are checking from Perth or Queensland, changing the display zone helps with watching at home, but remember to return to the venue's clock when organising a trip. Calendar reminders also depend on the settings in your calendar app.

Illawarra Hawks history: the original club and two championship generations

  1. 1979Foundation NBL season
  2. 2000-01First championship
  3. 2025Second championship

Basketball since the first NBL season

The Hawks have played in the NBL since its inaugural 1979 season. The official Hawks history follows that continuity through changes of name, venue and ownership. Older reports may call the team the Wollongong Hawks. Recognising that name helps connect an archive result with the Illawarra side you follow today.

The 2000–01 title and the 2025 champions

Illawarra's first championship came in 2000–01, with Glen Saville earning the Grand Final MVP award. A second title arrived in 2025. The league's official honours list records those as separate championship generations, not consecutive seasons. The gap gives supporters two different teams and eras to explore when looking beyond the current fixture.

Saville is a central name in the first title story. Gordie McLeod's connection includes both playing and coaching, while Mat Campbell features in the wider history of the organisation. The club's retired-number account is a useful guide to why those names continue to matter. Their historical standing does not turn them into members of the present playing roster.

Reading Hawks history without losing the season

For an old result, check whether the report describes the regular season, a semi-final or the Championship Series. A dramatic elimination game is not automatically a championship clincher. Likewise, an old reference to the Snakepit should not be used to locate a modern WIN Entertainment Centre fixture. Keeping season and venue together makes the club's long story much easier to follow.

The championship years explain part of Illawarra's identity, but the current ladder is a separate story. Use the season record above for today's competitive position and the completed fixtures for recent performances. There is no need to infer current strength from a banner year, or to treat one result as a summary of every player on the team.

The Sydney matchup and following Illawarra on the road

Games against the Sydney Kings offer a nearby opponent and a clear home-versus-away choice. The Kings' official ticket guide identifies the matchup as the Freeway Series. A Sydney-hosted game belongs to the Kings' ticket arrangements, while a Wollongong home date belongs to the Hawks' event. Pick the city and host before buying; the opponent names alone will not distinguish the two.

For a road game elsewhere, the fixture's venue and time-zone labels do the same job. An Illawarra team calendar follows every published game, including away dates. A Wollongong fixture page follows the place instead. Both are useful, but subscribing to both can give you duplicate entries for the same Hawks home match.

After tip-off, check the match centre for the available final score, player statistics and videos. On this site scores are not live. If a result has not appeared yet, the official game centre is the right destination for the latest match information. For watching from home, use the Australian broadcast information attached to the game rather than assuming every rivalry fixture has free coverage.

Illawarra Hawks fan questions

Are the Illawarra Hawks based in Wollongong?

Yes. Wollongong is the home city associated with the Hawks' main arena, WIN Entertainment Centre. Illawarra is the broader regional identity.

Is the Snakepit the same venue as WIN Entertainment Centre?

No. They are different basketball venues. Read the actual arena on the match and ticket, especially when looking at preseason or historical games.

When did the Hawks join the NBL?

They played in the foundation season in 1979. The club's official history traces its continuing participation from that beginning.

Which championships have Illawarra won?

The NBL lists the 2000–01 and 2025 titles. Glen Saville's Grand Final MVP belongs to the first of those championship teams.

Does a Hawks versus Kings listing mean Wollongong?

No. Check the designated home side and the arena. The rivalry includes fixtures in different locations with different ticket arrangements.

Can I subscribe only to Hawks home games here?

The team feed includes home and away games. For games physically hosted in Wollongong, choose that city in the calendar tool.
