The Road to the Championship
The published NBL26 format (2025–26), shown as a guide. This diagram does not confirm the format, teams or dates for 2026-27.
1. Play-In qualifiers
Third v fourth: the winner takes one semi-final place. Fifth v sixth: the loser is eliminated.
2. Play-In Game
The third-v-fourth loser hosts the fifth-v-sixth winner. The winner takes the final semi-final place.
3. Semi-finals
First plays the Play-In Game winner. Second plays the Seeding Qualifier winner. Best of three: two wins to advance.
4. Championship Series
The two semi-final winners meet in a best-of-five series. Three wins secure the championship.
How the NBL Finals Work
The NBL Finals decide the league championship after the regular season. This page separates the current campaign from the previous Finals, so an old result is never presented as an upcoming game. Check the season beside each series and fixture before comparing scores or planning to attend. NBL26 refers to the 2025–26 season; NBL27 refers to 2026–27. The championship is normally decided in the calendar year at the end of that season label.
Start with the correct season
The current-season panel tells you whether Finals games have been published. While that fixture is awaiting announcement, the latest available previous Finals remain accessible below. Choosing a previous season changes the results you are viewing, not the current league standings. If you want to see who is presently competing for a place, use the finals race and the NBL ladder. Those pages describe the regular-season picture rather than a completed championship bracket.
Read a series score as wins, not points
A series score such as 2–1 counts games won. It is different from the individual match score, such as 95–90. Open the games under a series card to see each result and follow the match-centre link for its box score, quarter scores and available videos. Home court can change between games, so a team listed first in the summary does not necessarily host every fixture in that series.
Play-In, Semi-finals and the Championship Series
The progression diagram explains the published NBL26 rules. Under that format, the first two teams qualified directly for the semi-finals. Third and fourth met in the Seeding Qualifier, while fifth and sixth met in the Play-In Qualifier. The seeding winner advanced. The other seeding team then hosted the elimination winner in a further Play-In Game for the last semi-final place. The elimination loser had no second opportunity.
The semi-finals used best-of-three series, meaning two wins were needed to advance. The Championship Series used best of five, meaning three wins secured the title. The official NBL26 format explainer is the reference for that diagram. It is labelled with its season because previous rules do not, by themselves, confirm the structure or hosting arrangements for a later campaign.
Single-game ties have a different purpose
The Play-In cards represent individual games rather than multi-game series. A 1–0 summary there records who won that contest; it is not an unfinished best-of-three matchup. The stage heading explains which route the game belongs to. Where a published fixture does not yet identify a team, use the official announcement rather than assuming the club currently holding a particular ladder position has already qualified.
Planning for a Finals Game
Conditional games and changing dates
A series can finish before every possible game is needed. A Game 3 in a best-of-three series or a Game 5 in a best-of-five series may be conditional even after a potential date is announced. This page does not create dates for unannounced games. Read the official match and ticket conditions before booking travel for a deciding game, and check whether an advertised venue or time remains subject to the series result.
Match times follow your selected time zone. A Perth home game will therefore appear at a different local time to a fan viewing from Sydney. The venue remains the actual location of the game. Use the TV schedule for Australian coverage and the match centre for the official ticket link. A previous Finals broadcaster should not be assumed to carry a later season under the same arrangement.
NBL Finals FAQs
Why are previous Finals results still visible?
They provide a clearly labelled record while the current fixture is awaiting announcement. Use the season selector and section headings to distinguish that archive from current-season news. Old games are not being advertised as upcoming fixtures.
Does winning the regular-season ladder mean winning the championship?
No. The ladder describes the regular season. The league championship is decided through the applicable Finals format. A high ladder finish can affect qualification or hosting, but it does not replace playing the Finals.
Are Game 4 and Game 5 always played?
No. A best-of-five series ends when a team reaches three wins. Later games are unnecessary if the series has already been decided. Check the official fixture and ticket conditions for conditional games.
Where can I find highlights and player statistics?
Open an individual match centre from its series card or fixture row. Available videos and box scores appear there. A link to the video section does not promise that footage has been published for every game.
