A second-generation Hawks connection

MacDonald is former Hawks captain Dene MacDonald's son. He played local senior basketball before attending Lubbock Christian and Chaminade, completing a computer science degree. College experience at centre added another dimension to his earlier guard background.

Preparing against Sam Froling

Illawarra's August 2026 signing feature described a winter training against Sam Froling, introducing MacDonald to an established NBL big man's physicality. His return also followed wrist surgery earlier that winter. Those are dated parts of his pathway, not a current injury designation; the log shows his actual opportunities.
