From North Adelaide to the NBL
Aliir built his opportunity through senior state-league basketball. His 2023 season with the North Adelaide Rockets led to a development place with the Adelaide 36ers. The next step came at Mount Gambier, where his 2024 NBL1 South campaign earned first-team recognition and helped open the door to a full roster contract with Melbourne United.
That route is useful context when following his NBL numbers: his professional progress did not begin with the Phoenix. It grew through successive opportunities in South Australia, NBL1 South and Melbourne.

A longer opportunity with the Phoenix
After another season with the Pioneers, Aliir joined South East Melbourne for NBL26. In May 2026 the Phoenix announced a new two-year agreement. The club identified his ability to cover both frontcourt positions as one reason to retain him.
His younger-brother connection to AFL player Aliir Aliir is well known, but Akech's basketball pathway stands on its own. Follow his minutes, rebounds and shooting alongside points when assessing how his role develops.
